Villa Poggitazzi, Tuscan Traditions going back to the 1300's...

History of the Villa Receptions Activities

The antique Poggitazzi Factory is situated in a dominating position in the characteristic Balze territory, along the trail of the Etruscans that crosses the Valdarno. The first installations date back to the time of the Longobards and initially had a defensive-military purpose. The Antique Ghibellina fortress, from the Pazzi family until in 1288 Uberto de' Pazzi ceded it to the Guelfa Florentines that reconstructed, increased it in size. They then entrusted it to Maffeo di Francesco da Sommaja, a Florentine notary republic from which the activity gets its last name "de' Libri" attributed to his family and the noble coat-of-arms, detailed with 3 books bound together with clear backgroun.

From the 1300's the Libri family realized a great restructuring and enlargement project to complete the dedicated chapel of Antonio Abate in the south piazzale. On one side of the chapel you can read a tablet put there in 1489 after another restoration done by Paolo di Maffeo de' Libri.

Over the years the property and the care of the "Poggitazzi House and Palazzo" continued to ba handed down from generation to generation. The nucleus of the property consists of three independent bodies connected to eachother bu underground passage ways and externally by courts and delimited corridors and two large gardens:one larger and more antique, restored with its original materials and the other more recent with 18th century implants.

Probably the northwest portion of the factory, the most recent of all the components, was reconstructed in the beginning of the 1700's according to the typology of Tuscan villas of that era, based on the architectural style however, present and recorded between 1500 and 1600.

Other extensions and embellishments like the wooden ceilings and frescoes were added in the second half of the 18th century when the Poggitazzi property used a dowry for Melania Libri Graziani in her marriage to Giovanni Magherini. Inthis period it was reorganized and deemed an agricultural activity, especially for wine and oil.

The tradtional production of cold pressed oil and DOCG wine is still maintained today. The antique villa-factorywas restored with maximum respect to the architecttonic forms and plurisecular landsacpe so rich in art, natural beauty and immense culture. These are the characteristics that will be appreciated by visitors and guests. It is also very easy to visit the near by cities of art like Florence, Siena, and Arezzo or having all of the Valdarno at one's diposition to see old style craftsmen at work or the new shops dedicated to the fashion of today.
